Mintage Guide

The penny is one of the most collected denominations in American numismatics. This page is designed as a single reference hub for the major U.S. small cent series, from the Flying Eagle cent through modern Lincoln cents.

Collectors often use mintage figures to identify scarcer dates, compare series output, and spot better candidates for albums, folders, and long-term sets. Lower mintages do not always guarantee rarity, but they are one of the most useful starting points when evaluating a coin.

Flying Eagle Cents (1856–1858)

The Flying Eagle cent was the first small-size U.S. cent and marked the transition away from the earlier large cent format. It is a short but important series that opened the modern era of penny collecting.

Indian Head Cents (1859–1909)

Indian Head cents replaced the Flying Eagle cent in 1859 and remained in production until the debut of the Lincoln cent in 1909. The series includes both copper-nickel and bronze issues, along with several important key dates.

Lincoln Wheat Cents (1909–1958)

Lincoln Wheat cents are one of the most popular areas in U.S. coin collecting. Collectors often compare mint marks, study lower mintages, and look for well-known key dates and major Double Die varieties.

  • 1909-S VDB — Extremely low mintage and highly sought after
