This 1960-D Jefferson Nickel BU is a well-preserved example from the early years of the Jefferson nickel’s long postwar run. Struck at the Denver Mint, it represents a coin that would have been a familiar part of everyday American commerce during a period of growth and change in the United States. In Brilliant Uncirculated condition, it offers the sharper detail, stronger luster, and cleaner overall look collectors enjoy when adding a nicer example to a Jefferson nickel set.
The Jefferson nickel was first introduced in 1938, replacing the Buffalo nickel and beginning a new chapter in five-cent coin design. Created by Felix Schlag, the series features a left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and his home, Monticello, on the reverse. By 1960, the Jefferson nickel had already become one of the most recognized and widely used coins in circulation. NGC also notes that the 1960 issue falls within the classic pre-1965 copper-nickel business-strike era of the series.
Collectors continue to enjoy Jefferson nickels because they are affordable, historic, and fun to collect by date and mint. Denver issues are an essential part of completing a full set, and Brilliant Uncirculated examples are especially appealing because they preserve more of the coin’s original detail and eye appeal than examples that spent years in circulation. A coin like this works well in a Jefferson nickel album, a mid-century type set, or a broader collection of classic U.S. coinage. The final sentence is an inference based on the coin’s date, mint, and BU condition.
