This 1971-P Lincoln Memorial Cent BU Red is a bright early-1970s example from the long-running Lincoln Memorial series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, it represents a period when Lincoln cents were still made in the traditional bronze composition used before the major 1982 transition to copper-plated zinc. In Brilliant Uncirculated Red condition, it offers the original color, sharper detail, and stronger eye appeal collectors enjoy when adding a nicer Memorial cent to a set.

The Lincoln Memorial reverse debuted in 1959, replacing the Wheat reverse and marking the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Victor D. Brenner’s portrait of Lincoln remained on the obverse, while Frank Gasparro’s Memorial design gave the cent a distinctly modern appearance. By 1971, the Memorial cent had already become a familiar part of daily American commerce, and coins from this era now represent the middle years of one of the longest-running designs in U.S. coinage.

Collectors enjoy Lincoln Memorial cents because they are affordable, highly recognizable, and easy to collect by date and mint. A Brilliant Uncirculated Red 1971-P is especially appealing for collectors who want a cleaner Philadelphia example with stronger original color than a coin that entered circulation. Coins like this fit well in a Memorial cent album, a date-and-mint collection, or a broader group of vintage U.S. copper coins.
